Leather is gorgeous and durable, which can last for years to come. We know you love your leather shoes and take all the precautions to keep them safe and shining. But due to their nature of usage, your shoes have to deal with a lot every day, be it the scuffs, or marks these are inevitable. Worry not with the proper care and cleaning you can make sure your favorite pair of leather looks clean and tidy forever.
Follow these simple steps to clean your leather shoes at home –
- Preparing the Shoes – Before we begin the cleaning process, we must prepare the shoe for the same. Remove the laces, the insoles, and any other removable item in the shoes. It is recommended to use a shoe tree, if you do not have one you can stuff it with old newspaper. This will ensure your shoe retains its original shape during the process.
- Removing the dirt – Use a soft hair brush or a clean cloth to gently remove the dirt and dust particles from your shoes. It will make the shoe's surface ready for cleaning, for leather shoes that are not too dirty or stained this is sufficient.
- Deep cleaning – So you have those stains on your shoes that look shabby, don't stress out, you can use saddle soap or a good quality leather cleaner as recommended by the brand your shoes are of. Using a clean cloth apply the cleaner to lather the areas you wish to clean, or the whole shoe depending on your cleaning needs. Wipe it using a damp cotton cloth, it is best to use white cloth to prevent any unwanted coloration. Let the shoe air dry away from direct sunlight, as the sun can damage leather.
- Conditioning - Once the cleaning is done it is time to condition your shoes, it replenishes the natural oils that were lost during the cleaning. Apply the conditioner evenly across your shoes, this will bring back the shine of your shoes. Keep it for 10 mins, and brush using a horse airbrush.
- Polishing – Apply a coat of polish evenly all across the shoes, if there is a specific area that appears discolored or has visible signs of damage, you can put another coat of polish over it. Let the polish sit for some time before buffing the shoes. A horsehair shoe brush is perfect to buff your shoes, be gentle and make sure the polish is spread evenly on the surface of the shoes. When it comes to buffing the more is better, so let your hands do the magic.
